High Temperatures around Flowering in Maize: Effects on …

We wanted to help breeders develop maize that can withstand high temperatures, so we looked at how high temperatures affect carbon dioxide exchange rate (CER), crop growth rate (CGR), and other important factors during the flowering stage.

CER is a measure of how much carbon dioxide a plant takes in during photosynthesis. It’s like a plant’s breathing rate. CGR is the rate at which a plant grows in weight. This is important because it tells us how much biomass a plant is producing.

When temperatures are high, maize plants can struggle to photosynthesize efficiently. This means they take in less carbon dioxide and produce less biomass. We found that high temperatures around flowering significantly reduced both CER and CGR in maize. This reduction in growth could have a big impact on yield.

We also looked at how high temperatures affect the development of the ear (the part of the maize plant that produces kernels). We found that high temperatures can cause the ear to develop abnormally, leading to fewer and smaller kernels. This can lead to a significant reduction in yield.

Understanding the effects of high temperatures on CER, CGR, and ear development is crucial for developing heat-tolerant maize varieties. This information can be used to select for plants that are better able to withstand high temperatures and produce good yields even under challenging conditions.
